The van pulls up and the first things out are a winding bar set, a torsion spring gauge, and a cordless impact. Before anything gets touched, the tech pulls the emergency release and lifts the door by hand to feel where it binds and whether it holds halfway. That one test tells us if we're chasing springs, cables, or track. From there the order is fixed: secure the drum and unwind any live tension, check the cable ends and the bottom brackets, run a level across the header, then spin each roller by hand and check the hinges at the strut line for elongated holes. Opener work comes last, after the door itself moves right, because a healthy opener on a heavy door will still burn out its gears. Springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges, bearing plates, logic boards, and common gear kits ride on the truck. We are not ordering a part and coming back Thursday.
Most of what we get called for in Los Angeles is the same short list. A snapped torsion spring with the door stuck on the floor. A cable that jumped the drum and left the door hanging crooked in the tracks. An opener that hums and does nothing, or reverses two feet off the floor because the photo eyes drifted out of alignment. A single spring on a light steel door is a short visit. A pair of springs plus cables, drums, and a bearing plate on a heavy insulated double is a different job, and converting an old extension-spring setup to torsion means new hardware across the header, not just a swap. Openers split the same way: a logic board or gear kit is one thing, a full replacement with new rail and safety sensors is another.
Southeast LA County and the northern reaches of the county share the same underlying problem: most garages are on second- or third-generation hardware over an original 1950s-70s door opening. Torsion springs rated near 10,000 cycles on doors opened four-plus times daily are long past life. Galvanized cables fray at the drum, rollers wear flat with dry nylon or seized steel bearings, and hinges elongate at the strut line. Repair is usually correct when the panels are sound: spring conversion from extension to torsion, cable and drum replacement, roller and hinge swap, opener logic-board or gear replacement. Replacement makes sense on delaminated wood, rusted-through steel bottom panels, or where a single-wide 8-9 ft opening is being widened. If your door is in that category we will say so instead of selling you parts that go on a door with a year left in it. One thing we do push on: openers from the pre-1993 era lack photo-eye reversing sensors and are a code and safety issue, not just a convenience upgrade.

How we decide what to recommend
The visit starts with the door disconnected from the opener. We lift it by hand, halfway, and let go. A balanced door stays put. Then we read the spring: wire size, inside diameter, wind direction, overall length. We check cable at the drum, where fraying starts. Rollers get spun by hand. Hinges get looked at along the strut line, where the holes elongate first. The opener gets tested last, because a bad door makes a good opener look broken.
